Bangladesh, US sign accord on PISCES

Thursday May 20 2004 12:02:17 PM BDT

Visiting United States Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca took part in the signing of a memorandum of intent witnessed by Minister of Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar extending cooperation under the Personal Identification Secure Comparison and Evaluation System (PISCES).

The PISCES programme offers countries such as Bangladesh the opportunity to use state-of-the-art information technology systems to better guard their borders and stem the flow of criminals, weapons and illicit funds across international borders, according to a US embassy press release.

PISCES data can be used to quickly and accurately identify and intercept individuals suspected of illegal activity, giving countries equipped with PISCES a greater ability to secure their borders and prevent incursions. PISCES can be used in the interdiction of narcotics and other forms of smuggling as well.
