Tornado death toll rises to 20 in northern district

RANGPUR, Oct 10:–The unofficial death toll in last three days storms rose to 20 with reports of more deaths in wall collapses, falling of trees and drowning in the northern districts, reports BSS.

Over 1,000 thatched houses were damaged while many trees uprooted in 10 districts of greater Rangpur, Dinajpur and Bogra during the period, unofficial sources said.

Concerned government offices are now engaged in collecting statistics of damages and loss of lives. Rehabilitation activities are also being conducted at many places.

Water level in the rivers are rising sharply in all places in the region following heavy rains and onrush of waters from the upstream areas during the period, official sources said.

According to unofficial sources, the persons who were killed by wall collapses, lightning, snake bites, fall of trees and drowning during the past 72 hours were identified as Harunur Rashid, 30, and Fazal Uddin, 58, in Rangpur, Mamtaz Ali, 45, and Juthika Rani, 12, in Lalmonirhat, Rina Begum, 25, and Abdul Karim, 35, in Kurigram, Abdul Kader, 50 of Gaibandha, Hazera Begum, 45 in Naogaon, Abdus Sattar, 55, and Jesmin Akhter, 25, in Bogra, Afezan Begum, 70, in Rajshahi, Kulsum Bewa, 60, Mina, 5, Babul, 20, Gias, 18, Mayamaddi, 40, and his brother Harimaddi, 35, Moriyam Begum, 25 and her two daughters Jomila, 5 and Khodeza, 3, in Dinajpur .

The unofficial death toll may further rise as reports are still coming in from the remote areas of the region. However, officials are yet to confirm these deaths. 150 more people were also reportedly injured.

Power supply was restored from last night in all districts of the region and telephone lines remained unaffected, officials said.
