Students at the Bangladesh University for Engineering and Technology, BUET, have now boycotted class for 22 days over a list of demands, including punishment to the students tied to an attack by ‘outsiders’ on their peers.

 

The students at the country’s leading engineering institution had clashed with students tied to Dhaka University’s Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall over a ‘drive to remove outsiders’ on Oct 26-27. Five BUET students were injured in the incident.

M'singh Municipality to become city corporation

After declaring Mymensingh as a divisional headquarters, the government has now decided to upgrade the municipality to a city corporation.

 

The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation or NICAR, headed by the prime minister, cleared the proposal on Monday.

 

A proposal to extend the boundaries of the Mymensingh Municipality, established in 1869, did not get the green light, said Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam.

Indian plane catches fire at Dhaka airport, no casualty

A nose wheel of an Indian SpiceJet flight caught fire at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today.

 

All the 74 passengers and four pilots and crew were evacuated safely from the Kolkata-bound flight, Wahidur Rahman, deputy director (air traffic) at the airport, told The Daily Star.

 

The accident took place when the aircraft of India-based airline was heading towards runway from taxiway for taking off at 10:40am.

Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Bill passed

Parliament on Wednesday passed the 'Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Bill, 2017' to update the version of the 'Bangladesh Atomic Commission Order, 1973' in Bangla.

 

Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafesh Osman moved the bill and it was passed by voice vote.

 

According to the new law, the Commission will be constituted with maximum four members, including a chairman having a science and technology background.

Several homes in the Thakurparha village near the district town were set ablaze on Friday during a large demonstration over a Facebook post allegedly hurting religious sensitivity.

 

A man was shot dead in an ensuing clash with police while 11 others were injured.

Home Minster Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said there might be a conspiracy behind the Thakurpara arson attack on the Hindu community.

 

"The Rangpur incident is the recurrence of Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagr attack. There might be a plot behind it," UNB quoted him as saying.

 

He made the comments hours after the arrest of Titu Chandra Roy over his alleged Facebook post that triggered Friday's mayhem in the village in Rangpur.

 

At least 30 Hindu houses were looted, vandalised and torched by religious zealots following the post that hurt "religious sentiments of the Muslims". A person was killed and 20 others were injured after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to restore law and order.

Humayun Ahmed (13 November 1948 - 19 July 2012) was a Bangladeshi writer, dramatist, screenwriter, filmmaker, song writer, scholar, lecturer.

 

His breakthrough was his debut novel Nondito Noroke published in 1972.

Parliament session begins Sunday

The 18th session of the 10th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) will begin at 4 pm tomorrow (Sunday), reports BSS.

 

President Abdul Hamid summoned the session exercising the power bestowed upon him according to clause (1) of the article 72 of the constitution.
